spainURANTIA Community Remembers Bert Cobb

"Born Nov. 19, 1943, in San Jose, Calif., Roland "Bert" Cobb, 65, departed for the happy hunting grounds Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009. His last days were spent peacefully in the house he built, under the care of his three children." So read
Bert's obiturary in the Magic Valley News in Bert's home town of Jerome, Idaho,

Bert's fond remembrances poured out between his friends in the Urantia community. Some of these are included below.

I just want to express my personal sense of loss at Bert's graduation, coupled with the joyous expectation that we'll all be regathered together again in magnificent and beauteous mansonia.

I loved his poetry, his humility, his wonderment at the cosmos and at nature's sublimity, his humor, his sincerity, his integrity, and his beingness.  He was the note-worthy poet of many an inspiring verse, and possessed a personality attractive and heart-warming to all.  What great authenticity he achieved in his life!   Let us celebrate!  Peace to all, - David Glass

Yes, it is true.  Bert graduated with grace and dignity from Urantia in the wee hours of this past Saturday morn at home with his three grown children nearby. We will miss him immensely, which is, quite honestly, an understatement.

It was our intention that all of you would receive the news through the soon-to-be released edition of Urantia Foundation Online News.  I realize this comes as a shock to some of you.  I also know that you, too, find comfort in the knowledge of the faith we shared so sweetly with Bert.  He is on his way in the Father's magnificent ascension scheme!

Well done our dear and faithful Brother Bert!  We love you now and forever. - Judy Van Cleve

Bert, I'm cheering you on as you ascend to the Mansion worlds my friend. I would dearly love to meet with you again and share stories of hiking in the Sawtooth Mountains, dancing country swing with the young local lasses to a hot live band in a Idaho tavern, jogging along the country roads near your place at Twin Falls spotting asparagus growing by the roadside which we'd come back for later and cook up for dinner, hear the  beautiful poetry that you would share, stories of hunting and enjoyment of the wilderness all connected with a deep love of life and unshakeable faith in the Father's overarching love.

Bert loved people and easily made friends because he had a great sense of humour and knew about electricity and had a solid integrated understanding of the UB which made him all the more personable. Love that photo of him reading The Urantia Book to his donkey.

Bert, farewell for now, God speed brother - Vern Verass -  Canberra, Australia

I must say that he IS a wonderful man who always kept a door open for a friend. I remember well the time my daughter and I spent with him at his house, then under construction, and how accommodating he was. Your thoughtful words of his last days on Urantia are greatly appreciated and the three poems shared bring a greater understanding of his life as it was lived.

He is truly a brother to have known, brothers in spirit in our heavenly Father’s never-ending family. There is a great deal of work to be done in this universe and Bert is sure to be eager to pick up his share once again up on high in the mansion world experience. - Nathen & Kasandra Jansen

Beloveds,
One of my favorite things to say to a person is this.
            You are . . . a
            divinely created,
            infinitely loved,
            spiritually indwelt,
            evolutionary,
            free-will,
            son [daughter] of God.

The core expressed in the opening lines—the spiritually indwelt personality—is the greatest unalloyed beauty our eyes can behold.  I have sometimes reflected how nice it is to have people in our lives that we don’t know well enough to see any imperfection in them (love gets real when mercy ministry has a chance to get in gear).

Bert is a person that I knew medium well and still didn’t see imperfection.  To be sure, we are all inconceivably remote from the Paradise perfection to which we are called.  Nevertheless, this is my experience with people who at the times I see them seem to be living in continuous communion with God.
Bert is a bright light indeed.
            Happy continuous communion to everyone!
            Jeff Wattles

Bert was always good to my son Daniel  when we stopped by on several trips to and from Oklahoma to Council. He made Daniel feel at home and was quick to get the mules and cart out for a ride. Saddling a mule is a bit different than a horse, his patience was appreciated. He always appreciated Daniel’s work ethic, he respected that quality in anybody, especially young folks. Good basketball player as well, beat me pretty good one on one.

I was glad when he told me recently he was able to go to the mountains while he thought he was in remission. Looking forward to working, the classes and the humor adjusting to the new body/mind with Bert and others on the Mansion worlds…..Les Tibbals

From Urantia to Uversa it is known that our friend,
Bert Cobb, has achieved his mortal end.
The bells that toll all chime his name,
His poetry and love are of lasting fame.
Gather round brave hearts and let it be told,
Cowboy eloquence and style made our Bert pure gold.
Agondonters prepare to fortify your stance,
With Bert in your ranks "error" has no chance.
Glorious the day when next we all meet,
On Mansonia to celebrate Urantia. Ahhh swweet!

Congratulations Bert, with Love eternal. Patti Snyder

I was very privileged to hear Treb speak at the Boulder Conference this past summer.  We took a few minutes to mourn Bert knowing of this day, while speaking of these same qualities many have noted here today.  We miss our friend but we know only for a while.  It is sometimes said that if you want to know what someone was about, listen to what is said when they pass.

I met Bert at the first conference attended in 1995.  We shared time during many events since and most recently in Chicago when he was working on the foundation building.  We shared a famous time at dinner with mutual friends.  To me Bert was always a gentle person no matter the challenges he faced.  Like so many parents, he sometimes wondered about his children.  When I worry about my children they tell me ( this to share with all of you ) but dad, I am your son and I am your daughter.  And so Treb, Rick and Jamie, you are the sons and daughter of Bert Cobb. Knowing Bert as a deeply spiritual, loving and realistic man, he is at peace with this progression.  He has left behind only his physical discomfort.  As his children, you are his comfort.  As his children, you are possessed of his character and qualities which will comfort you as experience ever becomes your teacher.  We will miss Bert until that day when we no longer have to miss anyone again.

May All these blessings be felt and known. - Benet Rutenberg

I  met Bert at our first conference in Nashville.  Since then conference was never the same without Bert.  His grace was achieved from years of study and practicing goodness, truth and beauty - his life symbolized those principles.  He was simply "Bert."

When we were organizing the association in Idaho, Bert personally visited every known reader in the state.  I will always remember our licensing meeting when I first heard his poem, "Jesus Was a Working Man."

"Heaven" is enriched by his presence.

My deepest condolence to you and his family.

Love,
Cathy Jones

A dear sister wrote me today these words::
"I know he was a dear friend of yours and I just wanted to say how sorry I am that you lost your friend, for a little while at least."

And I do feel that I lost a friend, and I am really sad...

Happy for Bert though, as I'm sure he is by now already tripping around  Mansonia  Nª1 , just after being repersonalized and learning how to deal with his new morontia body, and the new environment ... what a moment !!!

One thing that I would love to happen to me is that when my time comes and I die, next thing  will be to meet my friend Bert waiting to greet me outside the resurrection hall .... If this becomes a reality, and after I die I suddenly see Bert giving me a welcome hug, then I'll know everything will be all right...

Having Bert helping at the booth when we presented El libro de Urantia at last year's Buenos Aires Book Fair was a great thing ... He came specially to Argentina to give us his support and his backup, and it was great.

He could speak few words of Spanish but his help was immense. His only presence with his special vibes and shinny eyes could transmit a feeling of love, a feeling of  everything being OK, a feeling that our Celestial Father and his invisible kingdom were very close to us...that we were protected by the many angels around us. And this was because of his level of consciousness. He lived the Revelation, and always show forth the fruits of the Spirit..He was able to truly live the brotherhood of men.

Being human he must have had his imperfections, but I didn't see any. He must have made someone suffer, but I have only seen how much he was loved by so many.

I met Bert in the UAI Conference of 2002 in New York and we soon became friends. Another international conference brought us together again and our friendship grew stronger. Around three years ago he came to Buenos Aires on his holidays and stayed at home with my family and promised that he will come back and help if we participate in the Book Fair with a booth. And we did it, and he fulfilled his promised ...

He was always giving a hand when it was needed. The Spanish language website of the UAI was created about 6 years ago, but it never fell under the budget of the UAI because of misunderstandings or bureaucracy, or whatever, so we had to find the money among the readers..Bert provided the funds for two years, only because I asked him, and he was happy in helping with this project. This is how Bert is. A truly loving soul. And I will miss him... many will miss him.

Dear Treb I remember meeting you, I think it was in Dourdan, France, your father introduced us and I was happy to meet you. I also met Jamie last year in Buenos Aires when she came to share her holidays with Bert at the time of the Book Fair, and it also was a pleasure to meet such nice and lovely person. And I want to tell you guys that maybe your father as a father might not been a perfect one, as we all make mistakes in rearing our children, but he was a great brother and I wish that the sadness of this moment will soon leave the place to the feeling of assurance in that someday we will be meeting again and have a great morontia hug ! My condolence to you and to your other brother Rick.

Take care Bertito, dear brother, see you again when the time comes according to the Father's will! - Carlos Rubinsky, Argentina

EARTHBOY by Bert Cobb

I'm an Earthboy from Urantia,
this planet is my home,

and the open range of the Universe
is where I'm going to roam.

Mother Earth is my base camp,
it's just going to be a short stay,

even if I live to a ripe old age
I'll soon be on my way.

I'm searching for my Father.
I simply want to do right.

My face is turned toward the heavens,
my soul reaches out for the light.

My roots are in the soil of Urantia,
Mother Earth has born a son.

Divine spirits sent down their blessings,
an eternal adventure has begun.

I love my temporal living,
but some day I will die.

My body will return to Mother Earth,
and my spirit will soar to the sky.

Today the dusty trails of our homeland,
we don't have much time to kill,

for tomorrow we'll travel the stardust trails,
and be living the Father's will.

WHEN THEY DON'T COME BACK, THEY'RE GONE by Bert Cobb

Friendships are eternal
I'm glad to say
for some are no longer with us today

Kindred spirits, we've known a few
Pioneers of a new revelation
Helping Jesus to get his truth through
as they lived in this generation

two millennium down the line
the Fifth was revealed
in their own lifetime

and they received the word
with joy and mirth
reaping the blessings
while living on earth

They shared the teachings
as best they could
with love for their fellows
"the desire to do good"

there's Lynn Prentice, and Lee Farmer
as I can recall,
I remember Rosendo
and my friend Doctor Paul

And many Readers I did not know
planted seeds of Urantia
and helped them to grow

Not before, but after they left
sometimes I really missed 'em.
But now I rejoice
for we'll join them again
around the capital of our system......

MY FAVORITE BOOK by Bert Cobb

I was mounted up on the opposite end
reading my favorite book.

Now some folks think I'm backward
for the religious path I took.

But when I'm running free in the backcountry,
traversing mountain terrain,

Urantia mota makes my soul feel good,
and its science feels good to my brain.

But the greatest pleasure it brings me,
rated highest and far above....

is the reassuring goodness
of our Spirit Father's love.
